Kawakawa Tea - with turmeric, ginger and licorice

KAWAKAWA TEA
with turmeric, ginger and licorice

This recipe comes from Katherine Tate - our SOUL RETREATS Co-ordinator, while she was busy with her son and working on our retreats port-folio - she was sipping this beautiful tea. I have added some information about each one of the plants to give you a full rounded SOULful elixir. Enjoy!

Kawakawa grows abundantly and is a Native New Zealand plant, it is pretty easy to find for those of us in New Zealand who are living near some native bush - look for the heart shaped green leaves and pick ones with the holes in - they are more nutrient dense (the bugs know what is good for them). Also pick the leaves that are the furtherest back from the stem - they call this the grandmother leaves - the plant grows from the leaves forward - so if you pick the leaves at the fornt of the stem - the stem can’t go any further.

Kawakawa has amazing medicinal properties- calming for our respiratory symptoms and helps to regulate our nervous system either helping to calm or to stimulate it depending on what your body needs. It is also super good for your kidneys and adrenals if you are feeling a little overwhelmed and is a heart and kidney tonic. On an energetic level Kawakawa helps us to move ahead with no interruptions and helps us to release any old grief in our systems, she helps us face our fears and our darkness with a sense of compassion and also helps us with abundance issues and with following our hearts.

Ginger is warming and earthing, great for settling nausea and digestive upsets. Energetically ginger helps integration on all levels, it boosts circulation, is energizing and realigns all the doshas.

Licorice is also warming and is supportive for the adrenals and digestive system. It adds natural sweetness. Even my honey obsessed 5 year old laps up this tea with just liquorice as a sweetener. Licorice helps us release what no longer serves us - she is re-energising, balancing and nourishing.

Turmeric is an amazing anti inflammatory plant supportive for the immune system. Adding black pepper with it hugely increases its absorbency.

Lemon - go on add some lemon - its yummy! Try it with or without - but it adds an extra zing!

Directions:

  • Put 4-5 kawakawa leaves in a pot with water and bring to the boil. Boil for 10min (note keep lid on to retain the kawakawa goodness).

  • Add some grated turmeric root and ginger root, a dash of black pepper and 1 teaspoon of licorice powder.

  • Strain and enjoy!!
