Join us for a 2 day Whakaahua Dance wananga (workshop) led by choreographer and dancer Louise Potiki Bryant.
Whakaahua Dance is a somatic practice arising out of Louise Potiki Bryant’s long-term collaboration with researcher and composer Professor Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal. Whakaahua Dance is inspired by Professor Royal’s research into the historical whare tapere - Māori community houses of storytelling, dance, music, games and more. One of the main sayings associated with the whare tapere is “Kia kawea tātou e te rehia - Let us be carried by the spirit of joy”
The Whakaahua Dance Practice offers somatic exercises and techniques for creativity, healing, choreography and movement improvisation.
Whakaahua Dance draws inspiration from a central kaupapa of the haka of the historical whare tapere, whereby a quality from the natural world emerges from deep within an individual dancer to find it’s fullest expression in the performance of the dance. Whakaahua means to acquire form or to transform. Two of the qualities explored in Whakaahua Dance are the vibrations of light and heat, based on the female and male ātua (deities) of Māori dance - Hineruhi and Tanerore.
The Whakaahua Dance Workshop will be accompanied by live music from composer Paddy Free.
This workshop is open to all levels of dance experience.
